Residential Staircases
All residential staircases must comply with the UK Building Regulations.
It is advisable to get expert advice on how your plans might need to be adjusted to meet all current standards. However, the minimum going should be 220mm. The pitch of the staircase should not exceed 42°.
There are no restrictions when it comes to width. Standard flights measure 860mm. For the main staircase, a width of between 800mm and 900mm works best.
As long as the minimum standards for the size, safety, type and location of your staircase are being met, you will find many design options and choices of construction material to consider.
