In a contemporary home in Nottingham, M-Tech Engineering delivered a precision designed oak cantilever staircase that balances structural performance with architectural elegance.

Engineering the “Floating” Effect

Cantilever staircases are as much about physics as they are about aesthetics. Each solid oak tread was individually engineered to transfer load back into a concealed structural steel framework, securely anchored within the supporting wall.

Using advanced CAD modelling and in house laser fabrication, our team calculated load distribution, fixing tolerances and deflection limits to ensure the staircase not only appears to float, but performs with absolute rigidity and long term durability.

The result is a seamless run of oak treads projecting cleanly from the wall, free from visible brackets or supports. It is structural confidence wearing a minimalist suit.

Materials and Craftsmanship

The natural oak treads and matching handrail were carefully selected and finished to complement the light interior palette of the home. The warmth of the timber contrasts beautifully with the crisp architectural lines, while maintaining the strength required for daily use.

A frameless glass balustrade was integrated into the design, providing lateral protection without interrupting sightlines. The transparency of the glass works in harmony with the property’s expansive windows, allowing light to travel uninterrupted through the stairwell and enhancing the sense of space.

Integrated Lighting

Discrete LED lighting was incorporated beneath each tread, requiring precise routing, cable management and pre planned electrical coordination during fabrication. The lighting adds both functional illumination and an ambient glow, transforming the staircase into a sculptural centrepiece after dark.
